These 2 tracks were almost lost until Soul Direction in conjunction with Hoffman House Music & Triple Scale Music organised the publishing and licensing required. Soul Direction were able to get the tracks out on 45, where they need to be. Born in Osceola, Arkansas on September 27, 1942. Shortly after, Harvey’s parents moved north and so he grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
In 1961, he and his longtime friend Albert James Vance (1943–2003) formed the group, Harvey Scales & The 7 Sounds, which released several singles on Cuca and Magic Touch Records. Harvey and the band signed with Chess Records in 1969, recording for the Cadet Concept Records division, and in 1970, the group had a regional hit with the LaCour produced “The Funky Yolk”. Through his familiarity with producer Don Davis at Chess, Scales met singer Johnnie Taylor, who was at the time recording for Stax Records. Scales then moved from Cadet Concept to Stax, releasing a couple of singles which were “I Wanna Do It”, “What’s Good For You (Don’t Have To Be Good To You)”. Davis later signed Harvey to write and produce songs at United Sound Studios and this relationship proved highly successful for both Harvey and Don Davis. Harvey received national recognition as the co-writer on Johnny Taylor’s 1976 Platinum hit for Columbia Records “Disco Lady”. He was later signed to Casablanca Records recording two solo albums in the late 70’s produced by Melvin Griffin. At Casablanca, Harvey recorded the first two albums of his career, Confidential Affair in 1978 and Hot Foot (A Funque Dizco Opera) in 1979. He returned to the studio for one more album in 1991 for the Earthtone label. He then put out a couple of “self-made” CD’s on the Kashgold label around 1994. Harvey Scales died on February 11, 2019, at the age of 78. Dave Welding’s UK Based label “Soul Junction” also put out a 45 with a track from the “Home of The Blues” CD Album and the flip contain a previously unreleased “I’ve Been a Fool (To Fool Around)”.
